Overview
Chelsea Shades Division delivered a custom motorized skylight shade solution for a major event space in New Jersey, where excessive sunlight through 32 large skylight windows, 25 to 30 feet above the floor, posed ongoing environmental challenges.
To address the issue, Chelsea partnered with Lutron to implement a skylight shade system designed to ensure smooth operation, consistent fabric tension, and long-term reliability.
Given the project’s scale and complexity – including high-ceiling installation conditions, detailed on-site assembly requirements, and precise system coordination – the project required extensive technical expertise, meticulous planning, and hands-on field execution.
Project Highlights
- Chelsea Shades conducted on-site consultations with the client to assess the space and develop a customized solution to manage excessive sunlight in the event area.
- The project used Lutron Skylight Shade Systems with fully framed, tensioned shades designed to maintain smooth, taut fabric alignment across each skylight opening.
- Due to the size of the skylights – approximately five feet wide by nine feet long — each shade system had to be shipped unassembled and required detailed on-site assembly before installation.
- Chelsea’s team assembled each shade frame, calibrated the tension systems, and fully tested shade operation before installation to ensure proper performance and alignment.
- Installation required a motorized lift to access skylight openings 25 to 30 feet above the floor, adding another layer of complexity to the project.
- During installation, Chelsea’s team worked closely with the client’s electrician to troubleshoot and resolve a power issue affecting one shade, ensuring the entire 32-shade system operated as intended.
- The integrated system is powered by a centralized Lutron power panel and controlled by a wall-mounted keypad for seamless operation across all shades.
- Throughout the project, Chelsea coordinated closely with electricians, carpenters, and other tradespeople to ensure proper mounting, support, wiring, and system functionality.
